It looks the same, plays the same, and reads the same, even though I am acutely aware that it isn’t. The best change made in the remaster by far is the ever-present menu options that can be accessed via the touchpad. Playing this game feels exactly as I remember it. The story is perfunctory and the characterisation is almost embarrassingly childish, especially given the amateur hour voiceovers. The subtle, though tangible tweaks to Legend of Mana’s presentation, coupled with maintaining its core gameplay elements, flaws and all, has achieved something quite brilliant. For every one thing it does to enhance the original, it makes a strange, distracting change or doesn’t make an obvious fix. Now, you have the chance to recreate this world as you desire by discovering artifacts, placing them, and exploring the mysteries inside. In ancient times, the world was saved from destruction by sealing locations and events within magical artifacts. Once you have settled on a team it quickly becomes obvious that, just like the original, this an action role-player where combat is almost the only activity. This week’s Nintendo Direct came with a surprising Legend of Mana HD remaster announcement.Square Enix has provided a closer look on the Japanese official website with new comparison screenshots between the original 1999 PlayStation version and the upcoming remaster. You can switch between any of the three characters during battle but the main one is who the story focuses on, which if nothing else adds considerable replayability for a second playthrough. The remake though is strictly single-player only, although it does have a similar party system to the original where you can pick the main character and two allies out of a possible six. Secret Of Mana, famously, had a three-player co-op option, although that was reduced to two for Trials Of Mana.
Trials Of Mana is not a direct sequel to Secret Of Mana but it does have a giant Mana Tree in it, which in this instance is a sleeping goddess who sealed away eight monsters that bad guys are trying to awaken because… they’re bad guys. The mechanics of the combat are good, but actually executing these moves feels quite rigid and clunky, which can make the moment-to-moment action feel sub-par.
